When you’re a beauty lover, it can be way too easy to accumulate a ton of excess beauty baggage in your handbag. Tossing in a few products here and there can lead you to feel like you’re basically carrying half a Space NK around with you. And while this is no way to live, it is important to have the right products with you for on-the-go. As someone who persistently ends up doing their makeup on the bus, and finds comfort in the ability to reach for a lip balm at any time, here’s my handbag beauty edit.
I think it’s always well worth having some sort of light base product around. If you opt out of makeup, then realize you need to spruce up fast, there’s no better way to look instantly more polished. Going for one with SPF means you can also give your skin a happy dose of protection. The Chantecaille Just Skin Tinted Moisturiser, though pricey, is perhaps the most stunning on the market. It also is protective against smog and pollution, making it ideal for city dwellers.
However, if you find yourself with something more dramatic to conceal than the Chantecaille won’t be enough. Having a concealer on hand is almost like keeping a tube of peace of mind in your handbag. A recent fave is the Too Faced Born This Way Concealer, which manages to be simultaneously high coverage while also giving a natural, dewy finish.
Adding radiance on the go can be key, particularly if you’re looking a little more dull after a long day. The Noto Botanics Hydra Highlighter Stick is perfect for this – tiny, easy to apply, and can go anywhere in order to add a hint of sheen to the complexion. For more intense moisturizing needs, the Glossier Bubblewrap Eye and Lip Cream can be tapped over any dry patches to revive and hydrate. It even goes well over makeup in a pinch.
I’m a passionate advocate of all facial sprays, and though sometimes a little unwieldy, I do think they’re a necessary addition to a well-stocked handbag. The Eminence Lime Refresh Tonique is a new find that I’ve been totally digging. It feels like it helps keep skin on the right side of greasy, while still adding radiance and giving an incredibly reviving feel.
And not to be a total Mom, but keeping extra SPF options around is always a good idea. I love the Tarte Tarteguard 30 Mineral Powder, which acts as a light setting powder while also delivering on protection. It also smells like vanilla, which is strange, but not unpleasant.
Having a product that can add a hint of colour is always handy, and a two-in-one makes it even better. The Rodin Luxury Lip & Cheek Oils are delightful for this. They deposit a sheer wash of tint, but also give skin and lips and juicy, plumped up effect. For boosting a tired-out makeup look, there is no better wonder product.
I’m also partial to keeping a little bit of glitter around for emergencies. You never know when you’ll need to take your look to the next level, after all. The Stila Glitter & Glow Liquid Eyeshadows are particularly perfect for this, as they can be applied with their wand and tapped in with a finger. Diamond Dust, a holographic silver, and Wanderlust a neutral bronze packed with multi-coloured glitter, are my top two. If glitter sounds a little too intense, the Stila Heaven’s Dew in Silverlake is an amazingly innovative product – a sort of bouncy cream highlighter that’s filled with iridescent sparkles. Tap over eyelids or cheekbones for just the right amount of reflect.
Slightly boringly, I also think you should always carry a brow product and a mascara. Not the most exciting additions – but in your time of need, you’ll be glad you had them. Products that layer well over old makeup are essential. So for me, the Colourpop Brow Boss Brow Gel and the Maybelline Total Temptation Mascara are ideal. Both layer well without flaking, and play nicely with whatever other products you may have applied earlier.
My final in-handbag recommendation is a perfume – and the H&M fragrances are perfect for this. Not only are they extremely high quality for their diminutive price point, but they’re nice and small, so don’t take up too much space, and inexpensive enough that if one goes missing you won’t be distraught about a restock.
