While there’s absolutely something to be said for an extensive, “self-care” based skincare routine, the whole process can feel a little daunting. The idea of spending a large chunk of time each night of complicated and time-consuming skincare treatments seems a big ask. But there are skincare products that are ideal for these times – when you’re in a rush, or simply can’t really be bothered, but still want to do right for your face. Here’s my lazy girl skincare edit.
One of my top recommendations for those who like minimal effort but visible results is a physical exfoliant. There’s nothing which offers such an instantaneous boost to the complexion as the Kiehl’s Epidermal Re-Texturizing Micro-Dermabrasion. It’s an extremely fine-grained exfoliant which buffs off any flakes or dead skin cells without every feeling scratchy or irritating. If you’re just feeling a bit “blah,” a quick go over with this will fake the look of a full ten-step nightly routine.
Another amazingly quick and easy problem solver is the Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask. If you’ve been neglecting your pores and allowed things to get a bit congested, this is like hitting the undo button on your bad skincare behaviour. Simply smear it on (the nose, chin and forehead tend to require more attention than cheeks), leave to dry, and wash off. Pores will be noticeable cleared out and thus less visible.
For evenings of absolute exhaustion, the Alpha H Liquid Gold is an absolute godsend. It essentially replaces a full skincare routine in just one step. If you really can’t face doing anything else, take off your makeup, then apply Liquid Gold over the skin on a cotton pad. It essentially works as an overnight treatment to treat any skincare ills, from dullness, to dryness, to congestion.
Speaking of removing makeup, that can feel like the first impossible hurdle in terms of making the effort with skincare. The Primark Microfibre Cloths are your friend. They can be used with just water to remove a full face of makeup – but add in your favourite cleanser for an incredibly quick route to a totally cleansed face. They’re also incredibly cheap and cheerful.
Fighting blemishes as a lazy girl can seem an insurmountable task, but finding one reliable product to have on your side can massively help. The Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions Clearing Gel is always a good bet. What I like about it is it works on any type of spot-related anguish, whether it’s something deep and painful or some more surface level congestion. It also goes and clear, and never disrupts other makeup or skincare product.
For dry skins, the Tarte Maracuja Oil is a miracle. It’s probably the most moisturizing facial oil I’ve ever tried, and I’ve tried a lot. It has a thicker, balmier texture than other facial oils I’ve tried, meaning it feels like it really sinks into the skin and gets to work hydrating and protecting. If you put this on at night, you will look less dry by morning.
Another dry skin saviour is cult classic Weleda Skin Food. This has been in my arsenal for years, but it’s only recently I’ve started using it on my face. It’s extremely thick and a little greasy feeling, but it has one of the best smells in the entire beauty industry, and so far has not caused any particularly pore issues. It’s also absolutely amazing under makeup, as it gives skin that sought-after, healthy, lit-from-within glow in literal seconds.
Speaking of glow, I’m of the belief that there is nothing better than the Caudalie Beauty Elixir. This is really the ultimate in lazy girl skincare, as you simply spray it over your face, and reap the rewards. Even the laziest amongst us can probably stretch to a quick spritz – particularly when it offers instant soothing, smoothing and glow.
