EVOO – ever heard of it? You probably have it stashed in between the multitude of other oils you use in the kitchen to prep a variety of meals. But you know where else you can use it too? The bathroom, and to be more specific, on your skin!

Before we jump into where to use it, let’s take a look back at where it originates from, why some of it is considered *extra virgin*, and its nutritional facts. We wouldn’t want to spread fake news. Origin-wise, it’s pretty clear it comes from extracting the fat out of olives, and most of it is produced in the Mediterranean basin which includes countries like Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Greece. The olive trees have been growing in that region since the 8th millenium BC, and the composition of the oil varies from country to producer. Most of it consists of oleic acid (a rough 83%), followed by a small amount of other fatty acids. In order for olive oil to be deemed *extra virgin*, it’s required to have no more than 0.8% of free acidity which ultimately leads to a stronger taste and fragrance.

Its skincare use doesn’t originate from just a few years – in fact, it was frequently used for massages (in particular sports injuries), moisturizing and antibacterial effects for the skin, as well as cleaning the household. Nowadays, the more prominent of olive oils, and simultaneously also the most unrefined type: extra virgin, is commonly used in the kitchen for sautéeing and grilling, salad dressings and sauces. However, through the popular movement of healthy skincare products with no additives and parabens, we’ve increasingly started to look for products usually found in the kitchen, to use for skincare causes. Think coconut oil, rapeseed oil, and now extra virgin olive oil.

To start, we recommend you use it on your face and body as a moisturizer. Straight after taking a bath, its strong antioxidant and vitamins A and E filled texture will leave your skin feeling smoother, as well as stimulating cell repair for firmer skin. Essentially, it’s been used for centuries and often considered a hidden beauty secret. Women all over the world have been applying extra virgin olive oil on their faces and bodies particularly in places where specific skincare products are out of reach. The oil’s benefits not only hydrate the skin, but also rejuvenates, prevents skin ageing and nourishes it to prolong youth. We’ve even tried using it as a makeup remover (the results were astonishing!), as well as for a face exfoliator by mixing EVOO with salt and scrubbing it all over your face, particularly in dry areas to get rid of dead skin cells. It’s no wonder that Cleopatra relied on olive oil so much!

On top of the above mentioned uses, we like to use it as a hair mask to stimulate hair growth and for a shinier and softer texture. Mix 3 egg yolks with 3 tablespoons of honey and 3 tablespoons of EVOO and apply to your hair for 90min. Wash out with shampoo and you’ll see the results are almost instantaneous.

Consequently, before you fall into the next beauty craze and splurge on a serum that might not fit your skin type and needs, head to your kitchen first and see how you could use extra virgin olive oil in your beauty routine. You might be surprised of the effects – and if it doesn’t work for you, simply drizzle it over your next salad, it’s guaranteed not to go to waste!
