We’ve all had those running jokes about possible life-changing career decisions, but who here has actually gone through with it? Well, we’ve actually found two successful and inspiring women who, out of nowhere, decided to go “rogue” and leave behind their corporate jobs.
Meet Loren and Aphrodite, the co-founders of Maison Rogue, an e-commerce concept for women’s fashion and lifestyle filled with cool and unique ideas for a generation of women looking to try something a bit different and out of the ordinary. With a rich collection of fashion items categorized by designers from GUCCI to 6397, we’re confident the team at Maison Rogue is what you’ve been looking all those years. So without further ado, we’ve sat down with both of them to find out more a bit more about the lowdown of their day-to-day inspirations:
AG: Hi both! As we already know, you both recently made a bold move in your careers and left your previous jobs to join forces to create Maison Rogue. Could you tell us a bit more about your sudden switch and what motivated you to start Maison Rogue?
LO: We were working together at our previous job (and serendipitously left on the exact same day!), and were constantly joking about ‘going rogue’. We were frustrated by the corporate constraints and the lack of creativity we were seeing in the workplace, the lack of understanding for the consumer that was trying to be reached. We saw an opening in the market for a truly curated lifestyle e-commerce site with a mix of price points – a one-stop shop where you can get the best of the best without having to sift through 100 pages of products to find your perfect outfit. Being this consumer ourselves, we are able to understand her on a level these larger retailers simply can never understand her. This is our heart and soul, and the two of us personally do everything – from thoughtfully curating every brand and every single product to product photography, copy, website upkeep, financials, shipping, receiving – you name it.
AC: Maison Rogue was a collaborative idea that had been joked about by Loren and I as well as a few other co-workers. We had been talking about it for almost a year before we decided to actually go ‘Rogue’ and leave our jobs. For me, the biggest motivation to start Maison Rogue was the product. As an assistant buyer, my voice and ideas were not being heard when it came to products, onboarding new brands, and assortments. This frustration created my motivation because I knew we could make a difference in the e-commerce retail space, and we are! We have created a lifestyle e-commerce space that has been curated with established and emerging brands at high low price points. We understand that the millennial woman is wearing Levi’s but then may also splurge on a pair of Saint Laurent sunglasses.
THE PERFECT LABOR DAY WEEKEND LOOK
AG: What is your biggest inspiration when it comes to fashion and lifestyle, and what are you trying to achieve as entrepreneurs?
AC: Our biggest inspiration is the millennial consumer. Again, as consumers ourselves we feel connected with them and understand the products we know they would love because we love them as well. We understand the price points, quality and brands they are looking for.
Social media influencers also play a big role, they are setting the trends so it’s very important for us to stay connected with what they are up to.
AG: The meaning of “going rogue” itself can seem quite negative, especially in terms of letting someone down or being deceiving – how do you think the word represents your idea and how did you come up with its concept?
LO: We see the word ‘Rogue’ in a much more empowering light. Going Rogue means being risky and bold – it is being unafraid, to act on your own and to blaze your own path.
AC: From the start, we only thought of ‘going rogue’ as a positive, we were simply ‘going rogue’ from corporate and their very structured ideas. We were empowered with different ideas to create something that we are still very passionate about.
AG: You have a great selection of pieces on your website, from clothes to shoes, accessories, beauty and lifestyle products. What are your go-to pieces you can’t live without and what are this season’s must-haves?
LO: We’re true jeans and t-shirt girls, and I live in a rotating selection of Nike’s. I can usually be found in a tee or sweatshirt by 6397, and Citizens jeans. When I need to fancy it up – it’s Beaufille all the way.
AC: Yes, we are definitely jeans and t-shirt girls! Lately, I have been wearing my Levi’s with the Hanes X Karla perfect crew t-shirt with either a pair of Ancient Greek Sandals or if I want a heel, my favorite Alumnae sandals. To finish off my look I wear my Outta Love Le Specs sunglasses and the most perfect Addicted shoulder bag from Parisa Wang. For me, this season’s must-haves is everything from MM6 Maison Margiela. The classic triangle bag was reintroduced in a smaller size this season and is only $180! I am also obsessed with their classic clean white Monster sneaker. This season we have also launched the RTW collection, and even though the price points are more designer, the quality and styles will last in your closet forever.
AG: Is there an era of fashion you especially love? And which famous person do you think represents/represented it at its best?
AC: Loren and I are both children of the 90s, and I think it definitely comes through in our personal style as well as our assortment. I would say we connect with the fashion models and celebrity culture of the 90s most, we definitely can’t choose one person! There is so much inspiration from the 90s from Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss to Clueless!
THE PERFECT NIGHT OUT
AG: Could you give us the insights into your day-to-day rituals? From snoozing your alarm to drinking your last cup of herbal tea before bed?
LO: Several cups of coffee always to start my day. I live in NYC, but depending on what is on the schedule for that particular day, I will either drive out to NJ (where Maison Rogue is based), or I will meet Aphrodite in the city for meetings/market appointments. With us wearing a million hats, each day is pretty different, which keeps things interesting. Depending on the day, we could be shooting product, in market, working on financial plans, etc – there is never a dull moment!
AC: First thing I do when I wake up is: check Instagram and emails, this usually takes me around 30 minutes. I think it’s important for me to know what’s going on first thing in the morning so I am able to plan out what needs to get done. I shower in the mornings, and I have also gotten into a Cold Spring Apothecary skin care regimen. I am in love with the Rosewood & Patchouli facial exfoliant, Sea Clay & Charcoal toner, and especially the Clarity facial oil. Like Loren said our schedules are all over the place which makes everyday unpredictable and exciting. I do always end my day though with two mini Dove dark chocolates.
AG: And finally, where does most of your inspiration come from and what do you do to wind down and relax after a working day?
LO: Inspiration can come from everywhere and nowhere in particular – there is so much inspiration in the streets of NYC, but we are also finding a lot via Instagram and Pinterest as well these days. At the end of a work day, I like to unwind by taking a class at SLT, and then I like to indulge in some Bravo – it’s my ultimate guilty pleasure and nighttime ritual to watch ‘Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen’ right before going to bed.
AC: I agree with Loren, we do get a lot of inspiration from Instagram and Pinterest, but also some of the emerging designers we work with like PRISCAVera and a new brand we are launching in the fall, Paris Georgia. To wind down I also watch Bravo every night, I mean how can you not be obsessed with Southern Charm!
