Just the other week, my cousin asked me what I thought about Bhad Bhabie a.k.a The catch me outside girl (see video below) and I had absolutely no idea what he was talking about. Am I considered old at only 27? Am I not hip anymore? Could this be the first stage into my adulthood? Since I refused to accept any of these realisations, I asked my 15-year-old cousin to catch me up on all the newest celebrity gossip, Instagram wars and whatever else kids thought was considered *cool*, and here’s what I gathered.
We already discussed how we’ve noticed today’s popular culture is mainly being influenced by the hip-hop industry and this will show you just how much it’s true. Most of the celebs (if you can call them that) on social media accounts such as World Star are (almost) all rappers/musicians/entertainers in that industry.
Let’s start with the Catch me Outside Girl aka Danielle Bregoli from the Dr Phil episode. After the 15-year-old appeared on the show with her mom back in 2016, where they discussed their mother-daughter issues (if you can call them that), she has since started her own musical career with the stage name Bhad Bhabie. I hate to say it, but have you listened to Gucci Flip-flop? Catchy isn’t it! It has over 50,000,000 views, and she has over 13m followers on Instagram.
So apparently Bhad Bhabie and Woah Vicky have major beef. The fight was set off by Bhabie claiming Vicky used a racial slur to describe one of her friends at a birthday party. Since then, both have made reaction videos against each other, and the arguments are still public on Instagram. Any publicity is good publicity, right?
Rapper Pusha T apparently had beef with Drake recently as he announced in his song The Story of Adidon that Canadian rapper Drake supposedly had a child with a prostitute. Since then, verbal blows have been exchanged on social media, and Drake accused Pusha T of using Kanye as a host writer for his songs (this could actually be *bad publicity* for Kanye’s sake). All in all, this is getting pretty messy, and Kanye is not happy (see tweet below).
Who is this Pusha T? His real name is Terrence LeVarr Thornton and he is an American rapper and record executive. He initially became famous with his hip-hop duo career with his brother Gene, with whom he funded Re-up Records.
Ever heard about the vulgar 9-year-old Canadian kid that has been blowing up page nine? No, I hadn’t either and I couldn’t believe some of these words coming out of this 9-year-old’s mouth! She is mostly famous for being filmed doing inappropriate stuff such as kicking cars, throwing money, hanging out with known rappers etc.
The biggest news, however, is that Lil Tay has recently disappeared from all her social media platforms, and rumour has it that she jeopardised her mom’s career by filming one of her blogs in one of the houses her mom was in charge of.
Correct me if I’m wrong here, but most kid’s bible for all this beef on social media and elsewhere is documented on the blog and Instagram account World Star Hip Hop. The blog is a content-aggregating video blog founded in 2005 which publishes an average of 500,000 unique videos a day (also found on social media platforms). Some might find it funny, others very disturbing and even inappropriate but hey, that’s the age of Internet right here.
The website is mostly known for posting videos of fights, arguments and public shaming. The blog is highly criticised by the media, some stating that it has the potential of creating an unreal stereotype of the African-American identity, others quoting that it reflects the issues of American society. I’ll let you be the judge of that.
Although I might feel a bit has been when it comes to popular online culture, I don’t think you can question our knowledge of fashion so shop our picks of the week below:
