A bunch of new trends have re-emerged during New York Fashion Week – from cowboy boots and more western-style booties, to high-waisted skinny flared jeans with a slit at the hem, but we’re here today to share our passion for a yet familiar style. Forget jeans and footwear, it’s all about how to wear shirt dresses this Fall. From stripes to plain old navy, passing by prints and a variation of lengths and cuts, this style of dress is one never to be forgotten as it’s remained in fashion over the years.

We like to perceive shirt dresses as the ultimate cutting-edge piece of clothing to own in your closet during Fall season. Due to its multitude of uses for one, as well as its versatility when it comes to changes in weather. Let’s say you wake up one early morning in mid-September, check the weather forecast and find yourself to walk into a rather balmy day – 20 degrees celsius at its peak which means that a warm wool coat will leave you sweating as soon as you run around town from one press appointment to another. Wonder how to avoid this situation? Slip on a shirt dress with a pair of classic brogues or block-heeled sandals with a biker jacket or oversized blazer for a laid-back yet put together look. Alternatively and if you’re eager to cover your shins with anything leather – opt for a pair of ankle booties or knee-length boots with a casual trench coat to get the best of both worlds; bare legs to show off sun-kissed legs and a coverup in case of a rain and breeze.

Footwear and outerwear aside, what’s most important here is what to wear beneath all that, and during transitional weather like we’ve experienced it during some of New York fashion week’s shows (hello sudden downpours!), we prefer to be prepared rather than sorry. A shirt dress is what we tend to reach for in those times – it’s comfortable enough to let you indulge in fashion breakfasts (we’re looking at you Brock Collection & Mansur Gavriel), yet elevated and dressed up enough to make an appearance at the office in between shoes. What’s more, it’s a look you can style a thousand ways – add a belt to cinch your waist or a piece of jewellery like a chic brooch for a personal touch.

A little goes a long way with a wardrobe staple like a shirt dress, but one thing’s for sure – it is guaranteed a space in your closet year-round as it’s functional enough to be worn with a denim jacket and sandals, or a wool-blend coat with a cashmere scarf when temperatures drop. Whatever you chose to wear it with, make sure not to miss out o5 us styling it from now up until mid January!
