Sandals are unarguably a summer staple that is easy to reinvent year after year, thanks to creative directors each adding their exclamation point to their designs. One that we never thought coming though is more commonly known as the casual wear of sandals: flip flops. We like to refer to it as the messy top bun of the shoe world, as intrinsically casual they feel yet can now make any summer look seem more dressed up thanks to the addition of a short heel.
While we know that regular flip flops aren’t exactly everyone’s cup of tea, let alone something they’d wear anywhere besides a beach, but we promise that even though this style wasn’t one we were instantly on board with, we are now. Being huge fans of the plastic Y-shaped strap sandal for a while now, mainly due to their comfort and minimalist look, we like to add a pair of black Havaianas to most of our summer outfits. The only downside is that they aren’t really appropriate to wear in a more elegant setting than running errands or sipping on a piña colada at the beach. Problem solved thanks to this season’s it shoe and its options, rendered in various colour schemes and heel heights.
Side note: don’t confuse this summer’s trend with the widely popular flatform wedge heeled flip flop from the 90’s. We’re all for the ultimate nostalgic fashion return but sadly this ship has sailed!
Hand-curated by our editor, secure the reinvented flip flop sandal before you’re stuck with a loose sandal and a dinner to attend! The barely-there leather sandal offers a more formal sophistication than a flat strappy sandal, and the kitten heel gives you that extra inch of height you might desire come sundown. Take your pick from plain leather brown styles by Gianvito Rossi, to a more sporty style like this mesh look by Jeffrey Campbell, or opt for a sculpted ball heel like this one by Cult Gaia.
