Call us old fashioned, but there’s something about an LBD (that is little black dress for those of you that have been sleeping under a rock or missed Emily Ratajkowski’s Versace look at the 2020 Independent Spirit Awards) that is timeless and fits within any dress code. It’s considered a staple in a wardrobe and a garment you can do no wrong with. Wear it year round with tights during winter time and sandals with bare legs come sunshine. Next season though, we’re looking at styles that differ a bit from the original LBD and we guarantee you’ll like what you’re about to see.
How to spot the right one? Instead of turning to the regular ‘little’ or mini version of the dress, we look at midi lengths, ruffled shoulders, feminine necklines and smocked detailing. The fit doesn’t need to be skintight either, in fact in most instances we prefer a tailored bust generating a gorgeous décolleté and a cinched waist with the help of a belt. This way you’ll have more freedom to move, making the end result more functional and elegant. Also a huge bonus point for when you simply couldn’t schedule in *shaving your legs* into your diary.
As we move away from the fit and onto specific styles, there’s not much breathing room when it comes to colour. But that doesn’t mean you can spice things up with stripes, polka dots and lace trimmings. We love a pleated detail like this one by Banana Republic, and anything with light florals is always a winner in our books. Never one to shy away from puffed sleeves, especially when they’re long, this satin number by Rotate by Birger Christensen is a great go-to with the added belt and crystal-embellished buckle.
Finally, whether you prefer to go casual and sporty with a cotton version like this one, comfortable chic with ultra thin cashmere with this cardigan midi, or the full nine yards with a silk-satin and open-back feature, there’s room for everyone to choose from!
