Just like summer isn’t complete without a whole variation of similar looking white outfits, winter isn’t really winter without a set of ponchos and wraps. For the purpose of warmth alone, there isn’t any knit that comes close to it – for levels of coziness, it’s difficult to find anything resembling a wearable blanket and that makes you feel like you never left your sofa. And in general, there truly isn’t anything more chic and subtly sophisticated than throwing on a poncho over a plain white tee or long-sleeved bodysuit.

If any of the above resonates with your current mood, then I highly suggest you keep reading. Should you feel the opposite, I hereby invite you to check out our selection of 20+ knits we’ll be buying/dreaming about this season, here.

To tell you the truth, there is a whole process that goes into wearing an oversized garment like a poncho or wrap cardigan. First, you gotta make sure to layer up underneath – since most pieces are *very* bulky, there’s a slim chance you’ll get to cover it with an actual coat on top. Should you be the proud owner of one poncho that leaves room for a winter coat, then consider yourself out of the pickle. For all remaining, forget the non-coat aspect and use cold weather must-haves like a thermal top, a fine-knit turtleneck that may even double up as a bodysuit, and when that still isn’t enough, grab one of those ultra light down jackets that really do the job of keeping you at bay from freezing your fingertips off.

In terms of styles and color palettes, we came across a whole variety of gems. Expect fringed hems that sway as you march through the day in the most nonchalant way like this one by Mango, and this striped and frayed hem giving off a very bohemian look (also works really well during warm weather months due to its light shade). Moving on to more powerful and bright colors like this industry favorite: 60% off in a dip-dyed grey and purple colorway by Acne Studios made from a blend of alpaca and wool. More classic plaid ponchos include this one by Ann Taylor (under £100), and this one in various blue shades – both remain a holiday season winner. Lastly, when you want to remain cozy but need to be out past 9pm, we recommend this black velvet belted wrap cardigan by Cami NYC, as well as this leopard-print one by Anthropologie, and this chic ribbed-knit one in a neutral beige by And Other Stories.
