According to its meaning and definition on Merriam Webster, a trailblazer is someone who makes, does, or discovers something new and makes it acceptable or popular. Though sequins are merely considered an embellishment or detail on a piece of clothing, accessory or pair of shoes, we believe they’re the ultimate trailblazers in the dressing up process. While most of us have fond memories of wearing anything overly shiny and glimmer-y during our childhood days or princess-esque Halloween costumes, sequins are more than ever associated with the holiday season.

The good news is that ever since our calendar marked November 1st, we considered the holiday season to be upon us, which ultimately led us to make mental notes of what to wear to upcoming celebrations. We often resort to classic, timeless and monotone looks and tones, but this is all changing this season. I’m ready to let you in on a little secret – we were so convinced here at The Weekly Cut HQ that sequins will be all over our Instagram feeds and magazine covers that we took a leap and purchased our first all-sequin dress in the midst of August. Pretty damn early if you ask us, and you’re right – but when you scroll through this British retailer’s newest arrivals and come across a dress that will not only look perfect for any New Years Eve festivities, but won’t make a hole in your wallet, then you know it’s time to take the plunge. If you’re curious about what this so-called *perfect* dress looks like, take a look here.

Any preconceived notions one might have about sequins will be ended as soon as you see what our favorite retailers have been handing us on a platter this Fall/Winter. One thing’s for sure, it took us a while to get onboard the style but once we considered the various ways to wear the sparkly look without going overboard we were hooked. Take for instance our first sequin purchase, dating back to a year ago exactly. We stumbled across a silver sequin skirt with a high-waisted cut and hi-lo cut hem. Since we knew we wanted to wear it on multiple occasions besides holiday celebrations, we paired with much more subtle pieces to downplay the look. Whether you’re on the lookout for a skirt, dress or pair of trousers, wear it with a simple silk blouse or slouchy round-neck sweater for a more laid-back, yet sophisticated look.
