With summer in full swing and our first official holiday already off to a good start, I wanted to let you in on a little secret – I finally gave in to adding a pop of colour to my otherwise pretty neutral palette of summer looks. The idea came to life as I popped in to one of our beloved contemporary French brands and noticed a substantial amount of colour other than the usual dominant white. Fast-forward a few changing room trips and I found myself trotting home with 3 new pieces of summer clothing I’ll be dragging along on my upcoming trip.
The reason why I’m pointing out that last shopping trip and ultimate Sunday retail therapy is because I didn’t end up buying anything I’d usually lean towards – no white, no neutral beige or light grey, but instead I tried on 3 pieces that would ultimately take me out of my comfort zone. First up, a millenial pink long-sleeved dress with a boat neck, closely resembling Valentino’s Spring/Summer 2018 collection. Next up, a buttoned up black and white *striped* 3/4 sleeve dress with attached belt. Now, the second one came as a real shocker to me since I never wear black and white together as it reminds me of my once upon a time summer waitressing days (at which I was awful, to be completely honest with you!). Ever since, the combination of black and white, especially in stripes form sent me straight goosebumps to my back! Lastly, I settled on a pleated metallic green maxi skirt, à la Missoni. The light forrest green shade is one I’d never usually succumb to, but in the spur of the moment, I told myself “to hell with neutrals”, this summer will be *different* – and so will be my outfits!
And so, as I laid out my clothes to be neatly packed into my medium-sized luggage I realized a strangely large portion of my pieces were in a pale shade of millenial pink, or a stark dark brown and forrest green, as well as dark tones such as black with pops of orange and yellow. To say I was dumbfounded is an understatement – I had to do a double-take to make sure this was really what I will picture myself wearing for the upcoming 8 days!
This is why summer packing is as easy as it gets – leave the overthink and overpacking to in-between seasons, and let a new persona come to life. What’s the worst that could happen? You’re missing a matching pair of shoes or top? Head into a coastal town and pick up a local gem from an emerging designer and call it a day! For this reason exactly, we wanted to shine spotlight on adding a pop of colour to your usual almost predictable summer looks that will most likely resemble every other girl on the beach, and instead make yourself distinguishable and curious.
