When it comes to fashion, we women like to think we know what will fit us and what won’t – after all, we put a lot of emphasis into creating looks that will last all day, remain comfortable and can easily transition and take us from one setting to another. With summer just a mere months away from us, we can’t help but browse through all the swimwear options that are currently available on the market, and one particular style we’re happy to report is spotted everywhere, and that’s the high-waisted cut.

Let us take you back to the early 20s or late 90s, and channel your inner Marilyn Monroe or Brigitte Bardot with high-waisted briefs that work just as well for swimming as for frolicking in the sun. This season we’re shining spotlight on high-waisted styles that elongate your legs, are figure-hugging and tuck away any unwanted pieces of flesh, because no one likes to show off their food baby after a delicious lunch on the beach! We particularly like the flattering silhouette, and the retro feel to it that brings us back to vintage-esque moments of black and white movies and Bond girls from classic James Bond movies.

Both seductive and demure, the high-waisted one-piece swimsuits and bikinis of today’s designers hold a certain appeal that is hard to attain with a regular strappy triangle bikini. Wear yours under a midi linen skirt and wedged sandals for a sea-side lunch, or under a kaftan and espadrilles for a stroll around town. We realize that high-waisted retro swimwear aren’t for everything, but we do believe that the right shape and the right design will make you never look back for any other water-proof clothing pieces.

If you’re unsure which fit will suit you best and aren’t ready to splurge on a high-end designer piece, start with a one-coloured bikini or swimsuit by Topshop or ASOS, before moving onto high-waisted experts like Lisa Marie Fernandez, Norma Kamali or Zimmermann, who’ve been endorsing the cut since the inception of their brands. This season is all about stripes, bold colours and buttoned up pieces. Lastly, don’t forget to try one of the pieces by Tropic of C – supermodel and Victoria Secret angel Candice Swanepoel’s recently launched beachwear brand featuring one of the most elusive and flattering lines we’ve come across over our years of researching the best and most durable swimwear (that won’t get ruined after one sunscreen smudge or sweat stain!).
